Born in 1938, just as the great terror was winding down, his father was a secret policeman and his older brother became one too. In fact, it feels a little like he has been waiting all the time to tell us about Gordievsky, since this story is so much bigger than those he has told before. Those books were good, but this one’s better. Over the past decade, from his breakout success with Agent Zigzag to his biography of Kim Philby, A Spy Among Friends, Macintyre has built an entirely justified reputation for his true spy thrillers. His story has been told before, not least by himself in the autobiography he wrote in retirement in Britain, but it has found its ideal chronicler in this exceptionally rewarding book by Ben Macintyre.

White's classic tale of the young Arthur's questioning and discovery of his life is unparalleled for its wit and wisdom, and for its colorful characters, from the wise Merlyn to the heroic Robin Wood to the warmhearted King Pellinore. Together, Wart and Merlyn take the reader through this timeless story of childhood and adventure-The Sword in the Stone. Transformed by Merlyn into the forms of his fantasy, Wart learns the value of history from a snake, of education from a badger, and of courage from a hawk-the lessons that help turn a boy into a man. That is the only thing that never fails."-Merlyn the Wizardīefore there was a famous king named Arthur, there was a curious boy named Wart and a kind old wizard named Merlyn. When he arrives he captures a man called Jack Brennan, a Belter, who becomes infected by Phssthpok's store of tree-of-life root and is transformed into the human variant of a Pak Protector. The word "old", in this context, means about 2.5 million years. The first half of the book deals with a Pak Protector named Phssthpok who travels from the Pak homeworld to our (Earth's) solar system looking for what remains of an old Pak colony. The novel is in two parts which are separated by 220 years. The species is described in greater detail below. Change to the protector stage is triggered by by consumption of the root of a particular plant called Tree-of-Life, which cannot be effectively cultivated on Earth. Pak are a species with a distinct adult form ("protectors") that have immense strength and intelligence and enormously protective of younger Pak of their bloodline. This novel expands the story of the Pak Protectors which was begun in the 1967 short story The Adults (short story).Īt the heart of this novel is the concept that Humans evolved from the juvenile stages of the Pak. Even his physical appearance has changed, and gone is the ginger lad from Scotland and a dark haired battle hardened man takes his place. His eyes show a hardness that can only come with seeing things no-one should see. There is quite a telling scene when Walker sees himself in the mirror he too sees the changes in him. Here in The Sleeping Giants he is actively seeking danger. In the Ghosts of London, he is forced to venture deeper into savage London and we see a bolder, harder Walker emerge. Then in Mr Apocalypse we meet him again as a shell-shocked young man, living by himself and keeping out of harm’s way. We first met him when he was a rebellious young Scottish teenager and he started to fall in with ‘the wrong crowd’. We have been on quite a journey with our hero Walker. And I’m delighted to report that book 4 continues to be a riveting read. Discovering this Future of London series has been one of the reading highlights of the year. Then, there’s also c) which seems to have some credence given that it was Jim Butcher himself who stated it: Battle Talks was going to be massive, and he was going for a gimick…that didn’t work. Or, b) the full Battle Talks novel was massive (the preliminary chapter count from last year/this spring seems to confirm this), and the publishers saw the opportunity to milk money out of an extremely reliable franchise which hadn’t actually produced anything in five frikking years. There are two main theories: a) that the full Battle Talks novel would have been massive, and God knows that fans who have waited five frikking years for their next fix would haaaaate to have a book they couldn’t finish in a mere three hours (cough), publishers decided to split it in half. Skipping ahead a bit, we’re getting two books this year, Peace Talks (see below) and Battle Grounds in September. Then, when it was completed, the story goes, it needed extensive editing because of the gap between novels and the “extended” fashion in which it had been written. If you’re someone who has had their head under a rock, it’s been five years since the last Dresden book, and this one was supposed to have been completed by last October.
